At Nature’s Ultra, we know that our CBD oils can have a powerful impact on your life. That’s why we want to empower you with the knowledge you need to find the perfect product for you, no matter what your individual needs may be.
In our most recent blog post, we talked about carrier oils and the role they play in CBD and essential oils. Today, we’re going to give you an introduction to another important component of Nature’s Ultra products: terpenes!
What Are Terpenes?
We’re going to start things out with a whole lot of big words, so bear with us! Terpenes are a class of aromatic organic hydrocarbons. They’re made up of isoprenes, which are common organic compounds produced by plants and animals. Terpenes are classified by the number of isoprene units they contain: monoterpenes, diterpenes, polyterpenes, and so on.
To put it more simply, terpenes are organic, naturally-occurring compounds that have specific smells and tastes and effects. They’re mostly found in plants, although there are a few insects that can produce their own terpenes.
While you may not realize it, you actually encounter terpenes every day. Let’s say you squeeze a lemon slice into a glass of water. That aroma is the result of a terpene called limonene. In fact, if a plant has a distinct smell or taste, terpenes are probably the reason behind it!
What Are Terpenes Good For?
Two of the more obvious benefits of terpenes are their flavor and fragrance. A drop of our Cool Mint CBD Oil, for example, provides the uplifting aroma of peppermint. Our Citrus CBD Oil has the energizing aroma of citrus, and our Cinnamon CBD Oil has a bold aroma of cinnamon bark. The terpenes are the source of the incredible smells that you love so much!
Also, different terpenes are carefully chosen to enhance the effects of our premium grade CBD. We call this smart spectrum ™ . For example, lavender essential oil and CBD are both independently known for their calming effects. Add them together and you have a smart spectrum ™ product.
Terpenes in Essential Oils
Terpenes and essential oils are often confused as the same thing, so let’s take a quick moment to clarify the difference!
Essential oils are natural oils that are distilled from plants, including trees, roots, leaves, seeds, fruits, and flowers. They’re used in a multitude of ways and they can have powerful effects in your life.
Terpenes, on the other hand, are some of the many compounds found in essential oils. They’re usually the source of the unique smells and tastes of the oils, and depending on the oil you’re using, will help with different aspects of your wellbeing. So in summary, if you ever find yourself struggling to recall the difference between terpenes and essential oils, just remind yourself that terpenes are some of the building blocks of essential oils!
