What is a Wellness Routine?

Simply put, a wellness routine is a set list of tasks you do on a regular basis that promotes overall wellness. Not only does this involve our physical wellness, but our spiritual and mental wellness as well. Because this is for your own health and happiness, a wellness routine can look like anything you want it to! Yours doesn’t have to look the same as your neighbor’s. Organize something that will be the most helpful for you specifically.

While we recommend incorporating wellness into every day, you may choose to pick one day a week to really focus on it for a longer amount of time. Whether it’s after a busy Monday at work or a lazy Sunday, set aside a few hours to focus on the kind of wellness activities that might not be as achievable as an everyday task. This could look like a pamper night, a deep-clean of your house, or a full hour of meditation and reflection. If it will help you feel better in any aspect of your life, it can be incorporated into your routine.

When practicing wellness, you may want to follow a set schedule or pick things based on your needs for that day. You are worth the time and effort.

Here are some ideas based on each aspect of your wellness:

What is Hygiene?

Hygiene is described by Healthine as, “...how you care for your body. This practice includes bathing, washing your hands, brushing your teeth, and more.” Needless to say, hygiene is important!

If you aren’t currently, it’s essential to have a daily hygiene routine down. If you already do, take some time to evaluate it. What needs to be improved or incorporated? Do you have a hard time remembering to floss? Could you benefit from a new skin care routine? Regardless of what it is, take the time to add it to your day. It could be more helpful than you expect.

In addition to establishing a hygiene routine, it’s important to be sure that you’re doing it correctly. When washing, brushing, flossing, or cleansing, are you doing it for long enough? Are you using the proper products for your specific needs? Take some time to do the necessary research. If you’ve noticed that something you’re doing isn’t working for you, then change it. It doesn’t have to be all at once. Start with the most important thing and work backwards from there.

Good hygiene goes beyond just smelling good. Oftentimes, it’s detrimental to your health.

Benefits

There are many benefits of hygiene and wellness outside of looking nice.

Hygiene keeps your body healthy and safe. Taking showers can remove dead skin, oil, and bacteria that could get you sick or clog your pores. Brushing and flossing your teeth prevents cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Washing your hands can keep you safe from illness or getting others sick. Every aspect of hygiene goes beyond appearances.

Being clean can also help improve our mental health. When we feel better on the outside, we tend to feel better on the inside, too. Have you ever had a stressful day and all you wanted to do was take a nice, hot shower or bath? Not only is a hygiene routine an essential part of staying healthy, it can also help us relax.

What is it about routine that makes us feel better? Mariana Plata for Psychology Today stated, “The reason behind this is that when we organize ourselves and know what to expect, it’s easier to actively work towards counteracting the thoughts and symptoms of any of the aforementioned mental health conditions.”

So, when we set a routine for our hygiene, not only are we keeping our bodies healthy, but we’re making it easier for our minds to relax and handle the day's stressors.

Consequences

The consequences of having bad hygiene can range anywhere from having greasy hair, to losing teeth or getting sick. That’s why it’s so important to practice good hygiene each day. There is a consequence associated with each piece of hygiene you miss. While our routines won’t be perfect every day, as long as we are making an effort to do our best, you will find that you feel better and are healthier overall.

Remember, forgetting to floss for a night or two isn’t going to do any permanent damage. It’s when not taking care of yourself becomes a habit that things can become dangerous. If you need help with reminders, figure out what works for you. Whether that’s alarms, sticky notes, or an accountability buddy, do what you need to in order to make hygiene a priority in your life.

Tips and Tricks

Adults

  • Set a routine with a significant other or roommate. Hold each other accountable for better hygiene.

  • Plan a wellness day a few times a month as your schedule allows. Before you start it, sit down and figure out what you want to accomplish. This can help you prioritize your time.

  • Young Living and Nature’s Ultra have product lines for mental and spiritual wellness, skincare, and more. Incorporate essential oils into your everyday life.

Children

  • Be consistent. Kids learn from consistency and routine!
  • Teach proper hand washing skills alongside potty training.
  • Learn proper dental hygiene habits for your child. Teach them how to do it themselves when they are old enough. Most hygiene habits won’t be the same for you as they are for your child!
  • Be someone that your child trusts to ask questions. Talking about hygiene and proper self-care can be scary or embarrassing at times. Keep conversations light-hearted and supportive.
