At Nature’s Ultra, we’ve worked hard to develop the best possible farming practices and quality assurance system so our CBD products are pure, potent, and effective. That said, we know that any time you add a new wellness product to your routine, it’s a great idea to speak with your doctor. And CBD is no exception!
Unfortunately, misunderstandings about the cannabis plant can make some people uncomfortable discussing CBD with their medical professional. If you fall into that category—or if you’re just not sure where to start the conversation—don’t worry! We have you covered. Here’s your guide to talking to your doctor about CBD!
If you’re ready to talk to your doctor about CBD, start by doing a little research. Feeling confident in what you’re talking about will make the conversation much more comfortable for you. Our article about CBD and why it matters is a great place to start. It will help you understand what CBD is, how it works, and its safety profile.
In addition to doing research about CBD, you should also prepare by thinking about your interest in CBD. Your doctor will likely want to know more about why you’re considering using CBD and what you’re hoping to gain by using it. You don’t need to prepare a speech or anything, but giving it a little bit of thought ahead of time will help you avoid the feeling of being put on the spot.
Print off a few of the published studies. Some medical providers may not be up to speed with the studies that have been done on CBD. Showing them a few of the studies may help them understand the legitimacy of what your talking about.
Be Open and Honest
One of the most important things you can do when you speak with your doctor is to be open and honest. Remember, as long as your CBD is hemp-derived and contains less than 0.3% THC, it’s federally legal. And at Natures Ultra our products contain 0.0% THC. Don’t go into the office feeling like you’re doing something wrong! Instead, speak honestly and confidently about your interest in making CBD oil part of your routine.
If you’re already using CBD oil, bring the product with you to the doctor’s office. That will give them the chance to look over the ingredients and make specific recommendations. At Nature’s Ultra, all of our CBD oils are clearly and accurately labeled. You can even go one step further and bring the doctor the lab results for your specific product. Just visit our verification page here and find the file that matches your product, and you’ll be able to show the doctor exactly what your CBD oil contains!
Discuss the Benefits and Side Effects
CBD works by interacting with your body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Your Endocannabinoid System has receptors throughout your body, and it helps regulate important processes, including your appetite, pain, mood, memory, peripheral nervous system, and more. This system helps regulate many things, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis.
Homeostasis is a state of balance or stability within your system. As conditions inside and outside of your body change, your body works hard to maintain a stable internal environment. The Endocannabinoid System plays a big role in your body’s ability to do so.
In addition to talking about how you can enjoy the benefits of CBD wellness, don’t forget to discuss potential side effects of using CBD. While the World Health Organization notes that CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile, every person is different. It’s possible to experience some minor side effects, such as nausea, fatigue, and irritability. Talk to your doctor about these potential side effects and how you should respond if you encounter them. Often the side effects go away after the first few days of use.
When it comes to your health, there are no dumb questions. It’s much better to get the answers you’re looking for ahead of time so you’re not just hoping for the best later on! Before you speak with your doctor, take a couple of minutes to think of any questions that you may have. If you’re worried you’ll forget them, write them down and take them with you. Your doctor will be able to provide guidance and answer the questions that you have on your mind, so don’t be afraid to ask them!
Consider Your Current Medication
One of the best things about speaking to a health professional about CBD is that they’ll have insight into how it may impact your current medication. Any time you add a new health supplement to your daily routine, it’s possible to experience an adverse reaction with other medications you’re taking. That’s why it’s essential to talk to your doctor ahead of time!
According to our Chief Science Officer, Dr. Ty Call, “CBD undergoes first pass metabolism and is extensively metabolized by the liver. Because of this we do not recommend using CBD products in people with liver problems. Like grapefruit juice, CBD is a CYP 450 enzyme inhibitor and thus can alter the metabolism of some medications. Please consult with your physician if you take any CYP 450 metabolized medications. In general it will cause these medications to get metabolized more slowly and thus you may need to reduce your dosing.”
Monitor Yourself and Check In
Once you start using CBD, pay attention to how your body reacts. Take note of any changes you experience, whether they’re benefits or side effects. Then be sure to check in with your doctor regularly to monitor the way you’re responding to the CBD. They’ll be able to help you determine how CBD affects you and make recommendations for any adjustments that may be necessary!
