Whether you’re just learning about CBD for the first time or have used it in the past, you may be wondering how it actually works. We have you covered! In this article, we’re going to talk about how CBD works, its benefits, and its potential side effects so you can determine if CBD is right for you.
How Does CBD Work?
According to Dr. Ty Call, Nature’s Ultra’s Chief Science Officer, “the exact mechanisms of how CBD works in the body are still being investigated. We know there are CB1 and CB2 receptors in the body which are likely involved and we know the human body has an endocannabinoid system. Other studies indicate that inhibition of adenosine, activity at the 5-HT1a receptor, glycine receptors and GPR55 receptors may be involved (World Health Organization 2018 CBD Critical Report Review).”
That’s a pretty in-depth explanation, so let’s break things down a little bit! CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is one of the primary cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that bind to the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) receptors in cell membranes throughout your body.
Benefits of CBD
Endocannabinoids and their receptors play different roles in different types of tissues. But no matter where in your body they’re located, their goal is the same: homeostasis. Homeostasis is a state of balance and stability. As conditions inside and outside of your body change, your body needs to react and adapt to return to a balanced state. The Endocannabinoid System is one of the mechanisms that your body uses in order to return to homeostasis. Click here to learn more!
Now that you know how CBD works and what kind of effect it can have, let’s talk about how much you should use. At Nature’s Ultra, each of our products offers different options for strength. A higher strength will have a greater concentration of CBD per dose than a lower strength. For example, our oils come in two strengths: 500 mg and 1000 mg. A strength of 500 mg contains approximately 16.66 mg of CBD per full dropper (1mL), and a strength of 1000 mg contains approximately 33.33 mg of CBD per full dropper (1mL). Everyone is different, so it’s important to find the strength that works best for you. We recommend starting with a lower strength and working your way up once you know how your body reacts to it.
Whether you’ve selected a lower or higher strength, our recommendations for use will be the same. For our CBD oils, you will use one full dropper—that’s one milliliter of oil—and apply it to the desired area. For our Muscle Rub and our Roll-Ons, you’ll apply them generously as desired. Remember, it’s okay to start out with just a little bit and increase the amount as you get familiar with how your body responds to the products!
Are There Side Effects when Using CBD?
According to the World Health Organization’s critical review on cannabidiol, “CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile.” The review also noted that “in humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential.”
Of course, every person is different, and people respond to things in different ways. Therefore, it is possible to experience some side effects when you use CBD oils. Potential side effects of CBD include nausea, fatigue, and irritability. As you use CBD oils, pay attention to your body and how you react to the products, and speak to a medical professional if you have any concerns.
Dr. Call notes, “CBD undergoes first pass metabolism and is extensively metabolized by the liver. Because of this we do not recommend using CBD products in people with liver problems. Like grapefruit juice, CBD is a CYP 450 enzyme inhibitor and thus can alter the metabolism of some medications. Please consult with your physician if you take any CYP 450 medications. In general it will make these medications metabolize slower and thus you may need to reduce your dosing.”
While there are a few potential side effects associated with CBD, experiencing a high is not a side effect you need to worry about. THC is the psychoactive compound of the cannabis plant, and it’s the compound that causes euphoric side effects. Because Nature’s Ultra CBD is tested extensively to ensure that it contains 0.0% THC, using our CBD products will not cause the mood-altering effects sometimes associated with cannabis.
Is CBD Right for You?
Let’s wrap things up with the question that’s probably on your mind right now: is CBD right for you?
As we mentioned above, CBD is regarded as generally well-tolerated with a good safety profile and does not indicate potential for dependency. That means it’s likely a great choice for you!
It’s important to keep in mind that the safety profile and any benefits of CBD are dependent on the quality of the oil that you use. At Nature’s Ultra, we have partner farm, where we use organic and sustainable farming practices to cultivate high-quality hemp. During the extraction process, we test multiple times for potency and purity. The result is CBD oil that is pure and contains 0.0% THC. And to ensure that every single one of our products is as high-quality as possible, we have a rigorous quality assurance system.
Once we’re satisfied that our CBD is as pure and potent as possible, we combine it with Young Living essential oils.
