Enhancing Your Fitness Routine - What You Should Know

Having a regular fitness routine can improve your life in many ways. Not only does it burn extra energy and get your body moving, it can also help establish a routine in your day-to-day life. Humans thrive on routine. It gives us something to expect, as well as a sense of stability if there are some rocky parts of our life. But, how do you know exactly what kind of fitness routine you want to establish? And when is the best time to exercise? Today we’re going to talk about morning vs evening fitness routines, and some tips and tricks to use along the way. 

What is a Fitness Routine? 

In order to establish a fitness routine, you need to know what it is. A fitness routine is a specific exercise plan that you follow during a set amount of time. Whether you decide to work out three times a week, or seven days a week, this can be considered your routine.   

If you have specific exercises you like to do on certain days of the week (arm day, leg day, etc.), this can also be considered part of your routine. Essentially, anything that you regularly plan to do is part of your fitness routine. 

A fitness routine can be changed and edited depending on your specific needs and goals. For example, you may decide that you will work out three times a week. On Mondays you’ll do cardio, Thursdays you’ll do weight training, and Saturdays you’ll do yoga or pilates, depending on which class is offered. Before your workouts, you’ll drink a protein shake and eat a piece of fruit, and after you’ll drink a tall glass of lemon water and stretch. This is the perfect example of a well thought out fitness routine! 

But, a hard decision when it comes to establishing a fitness routine, is what time of day to work out. Let’s talk about some of the pros and cons of working out during different times of day. 

Pros and Cons of a Morning Routine 

There can be a lot of advantages to working out in the morning. If you have a hard time getting up to start your day, choosing to work out in the morning could greatly help you! When you have a routine established, it can be easier to go through the motions and start your day. It’s also a better way to wake up than drinking caffeine, as exercising releases endorphins that will help you feel alive and awake. Not only that, but it frees up your evening to work ohobbies, or relax after a long day.  

Though there are a lot of benefits to working out in the morning, there are also some drawbacks. If you’re working out in the morning, not only does it mean you have to wake up earlier, it also means that you’ll probably have to shower. This could add even more things to do onto your morning, which might get overwhelming. Plus, you could lose some of the benefits of working out at night!  

Pros and Cons of Evening Routine 

Just like working out in the morning, working out at night has its benefits. Exercise is a great way to release tension and help you relax. So, if you generally have a stressful day at work or with the kids, working out after all of that will help you relax. It can also give you something to look forward to at the end of a long day, especially if your workout of choice is something fun! Lastly, working out at night can help get rid of any left over energy you have from the day, making it easier to sleep. 

Because working out releases a lot of endorphins, you have to be careful of how late in the day you choose to work out. This can make things tricky if you haven’t established a regular nightly routine, as it might keep you up longer if you workout too late. It also gives you less time to do relaxing, stationary activities such as reading or meditating. And, if you have family at home, you might have to wait until the kids go to bed or risk missing time with them. 

Regardless of when you choose to work out, there will be pros and cons. No answer is the right answer! The best way to decide is by looking at your schedule and long-term fitness goals. And if you need to switch off on certain days, that’s okay, too. 

Exercises You Can Do  

If you don’t already have an established workout routine, it can be hard to decide what types of exercises you’d like to do. Luckily, we have some ideas for you that can be used in the morning or at night. 

Going on a walk or run in the morning is a great way to start the day. Not only does it get your blood pumping and body moving, it will also raise your metabolism and resting heart rate, allowing you to keep burning calories throughout the entire day. Going for a walk or run at night is also great, as it will do the same for you while you sleep, as well as burn off extra energy before you go to bed.  

Yoga is the perfect way to start or end your day. It will help you center yourself, ease anxious thoughts, flood your body with oxygen, and improve flexibility. This will help you find peace throughout your day, or help you wind down before going to bed at night.   

If you like to incorporate cardio into your fitness routine, things like Zumba or dancing are both really fun, and a great work out! There are lots of videos to follow online. Pick a few of your favorites and shuffle through each time you workout. Establishing what video you’re going to follow the day before will make working out in both the morning and evening a lot easier—not to mention more fun.
