When we have the flu, we stay home from work. When we break an arm, we wear a cast and allow it to rest. But, when we’re emotionally unwell, are we taking the time we need to get better? Good health goes way beyond what your body is feeling. It’s important to make sure that you’re taking care of your emotional health, too! Today we’ll be talking about what emotional wellness is, why it’s important, and some ways to improve it.
What is Emotional Wellness?
When thinking of emotional wellness, what immediately comes to mind? A lot of people may think about mental health issues, such as depression or PTSD. While these play a factor in emotional wellness, it doesn’t fully encompass what it is. Everyone should be taking care of their emotional health, regardless of what their mental health status may be.
Simply put, emotional wellness describes the relationship each of us has with our emotions. If you often find yourself ignoring negative feelings, crying a lot, or feeling burnt out or stressed, this may be a sign that your emotional wellness, or your relationship with your emotions, is not healthy.
However, being emotionally well does not mean the absence of negative feelings. We’re all human, after all! There are going to be days where we feel sad, angry, lost, hopeless, or anxious. Unfortunately, that just can’t be helped. But, while we don’t have full control over our life circumstances, we do have control over how we respond to them and these negative emotions. If you react to them in a healthy and positive way, that’s a sign that you have a good relationship with your emotions. If you choose to ignore them or berate yourself for feeling them, your relationship is most likely negative.
Why is it Important?
Emotional wellness is important because it affects our ability to cope with everyday life. You can experience a range of emotions all in one day. Life is a roller coaster filled with ups and downs. It’s almost impossible to only feel one emotion for an extended amount of time! Because of this, how we respond to our emotions is important. It dictates our actions, how we respond to others, and how we view the day overall.
Emotional wellness can also have long term side effects. When we do the same thing over and over again, it becomes muscle memory. Our brains get used to responding to specific triggers in that way. So, when you choose to bottle up your emotions every time someone hurts your feelings, it’s going to become a habit. Bottling up your emotions can make opening up to others harder and harder the longer it goes on. It can also cause mental health issues. If you’re responding to your emotions in an unhealthy way, it’s going to do more and more damage overtime.
When we’re settling for poor emotional wellness, we’re settling for a quality of life that could be so much better. Remember, focusing on our emotional wellness does not make us weak. It shows that we care about our state of mind and our personal happiness. That is never something to be ashamed of!
How Can it be Improved?
The great news is that emotional wellness can always be worked on. You don’t have to have a bad relationship with your emotions permanently! There are a couple of different things you can do to improve your emotional health.
First, take inventory on your stress. Do you often find yourself so overloaded that you can’t seem to find the energy to do anything but the task that is causing you stress? It’s time to find ways to reduce that strain permanently. Whether it’s asking for less projects at work, getting help with household chores, or letting go of a responsibility or two, dropping unwanted stress is important. Don’t let anyone tell you that it’s selfish, either! You have a right to drop anything that is causing a toll on your emotional wellness.
Next, take a look at your thoughts. Are they helping you or harming you? Emotional wellness is all about mindset. If you are choosing to think negatively about yourself, your emotions, and your circumstances, you won’t be able to handle them in a positive or healthy way. When you approach your emotions with a positive and grateful attitude, you will have a better relationship with them, and will be able to cope in a more healthy way. It sounds odd to be grateful for emotions such as sadness, but it’s important to remember that every emotion has its place. Not only does it help you understand your current place in life, but it will also allow you to feel even greater joy.
If you are having a hard time controlling your thoughts, or have other unresolved issues, it’s never a bad idea to seek professional help! There are people trained to help you unlearn bad habits and improve your relationship with your emotions.
Lastly, while a lot of emotional wellness has to do with our mental status, we can always incorporate some physical tools! Getting your body moving and into a feel-good state can also help improve the way you respond to emotions. Is there a new sport or workout routine you’ve been dying to try? Go and get those endorphins up! Not only will it help put you in a more light-hearted mood, it will also help reduce stress in the long run by burning nervous energy and frustration.
Do you have a favorite self care routine? You should try to do it as often as possible, but be sure to put an emphasis on it on harder days. Things like long showers or baths, reading a good book, or drinking your favorite tea are great ways to unwind. You can also try to encourage a positive and relaxing atmosphere throughout the day by using your favorite scents or oils! We highly recommend our Cinnamon CBD Oil. It has the highest quality CBD, as well as the uplifting aroma and energy of Cinnamon oil!
Whatever it is that you choose to do to improve your emotional wellness, just be sure to do it often. Remember, when it comes to health, consistency is key.
